Mad Minute Practice
Our class practices the Mad Minute 3-5 times/week. It is a program that stresses the importance of instant recall of basic math facts.
In grade 2, the goal is for the students to recall their facts to 18 in addition and subtraction quickly. The goal is memory and accuracy. A reasonable END OF YEAR goal is to be able to recall around 20 or more facts in a minute.
Students will be given a Mad Minute 3-5 times/week. They are asked to complete questions in the order they appear from left to right and top to bottom.
Grading
Students are marked up to the first incorrect (including backwards numbers and illegible numbers) or blank fact. This type of grading may seem harsh, but it does the following:
-It encourages the students to learn ALL the basic facts, instead of just the “easy” ones
-It emphasizes the need to avoid careless errors in math
IMPORTANT
Your child is NOT being graded and it DOES NOT affect their final grade. This is considered practice and the number they got correct is being used to show their gradual improvement as the weeks go by. TRUST the process…ALL students will see improvement after a couple of weeks.
CUBES
Students are using this strategy when solving word problems.
*Circle the key numbers. If they are written in word form, write the standard form above the words.
*Underline the question. What are you being asked to solve?
*Box any math ACTION words. These key words will tell you what to do to solve the problem.
*Evaluate what STEPS you should take to solve the problem.
Eliminate any information you do not need.
* Solve and check. Does my answer make sense? How can I double check my work?
(Write a complete sentence to answer the problem.)
