Microwaves/Snack Shop
We have no specific days for microwave use, but please keep in mind that your child has approximately 20 minutes for lunch eating and clean up. Please send items that take 1 minute or less to heat up, in microwaveable containers. It is the student's responsibility to hand in items for heat up.
*No heat ups on Fridays, please.
When sending Snack Shop money, please indicate what your child should be purchasing and attach a name to the money.
Agendas
Agendas are your child’s responsibility. They will be reminded to write in them and check them independently. The goal is to teach them to be accountable to themselves. The agenda is a tool for them to help them remember their responsibilities. I expect them to show me their agendas if there is a note for me. We will be working towards this goal throughout the year for each child.
Homework
Homework teaches your child study skills, use of time and prepares them for the later grades. I do not assign homework on a daily basis, however, if a student choses to use their time inappropriately during their class time, they will have classwork to complete at home.
I also assign about 10 - 15 minutes of homework every weekend, which I encourage the student to complete. The student will be rewarded if the homework comes back completed the following Monday. This is an extra and it is optional.
Mailboxes/Missed Days
Mailboxes have been given to each student in the classroom. The expectation is that their mailboxes be emptied daily. Homework, notes, agendas and other communication will be placed in their mailboxes. If your child is absent, feel free to send a sibling/friend to pick up their homework at the end of the school day. Everything the student has missed that day will be placed into their mailbox.
Home Reading Program
Home Reading will begin before the end of September. Each child is expected to read daily for a minimum of 15 minutes. It is their responsibility to remind their parents that they need to read. The books sent home will be at their independent reading level, which means it is a book that they can read fluently (like they’re talking) and with 98% accuracy (they don’t need your help decoding words). They may read other books of their choice as well and record their books in the reading log that will be passed out when the Home Reading program begins. Students may borrow from my personal library, in addition to their own book choice. Students are responsible for exchanging their own Home Reading books - and it's OK to read a favourite a few times.
Students DO NOT move up a level because they've read all the books in that level. Students are moved up a level when they are able to read at that level with 98% accuracy and fluently.
* If you’re picking up your child or coming to volunteer between the times of 9am – 3pm, please make sure that you check in at the front office so we know who is in our building. All students have been instructed to NOT open the door for anyone from any side doors in our building. So if you go knocking on the side doors, you’ll see our students waving you towards the front of the school. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
*If you’d like to volunteer, please contact us. We welcome volunteers in the classroom!
