The primary grades use Fountas & Pinnell to level your child's reading progress. A reasonable expectation for end of grade 2 is level M/N. It is normal for a child to be on these levels all year round.
Your child is moved up to the next level when they are able to read fluently, summarize what they’ve read and able to answer comprehension questions. The higher the reading level, the more involved the comprehension gets.
Please remember to read consistently. Home Reading books should be easy for your child to read. They should be able to read the entire book independently with 99% accuracy. They should also be able to comprehend the book, as well. As you work with your child and read for a minimum of 10 minutes/day, please keep these guidelines in mind:
-At the end of grade one, Fountas & Pinnell Level J is grade level expectation (reading/comprehension).
-Around November of grade 2, grade level expectation (3) for INDEPENDENT reading/comprehension is Fountas & Pinnell Level J/K.
-Around March of grade 2, grade level expectation (3) for INDEPENDENT reading/comprehension is Fountas & Pinnell Level L.
-June of grade 2, grade level expectation (3) for INDEPENDENT reading/comprehension is Fountas & Pinnell Level M.

Reading Rewards
*Every Tuesday, I will check your child's Reading Log and total their minutes. I will be keeping a running total (100 minutes will be represented with a stamp, sticker or initial).
*For every 100 minutes, they will receive some type of reward.
*When your child reaches a total of 3000 minutes (should be about April, if they read 10-15 minutes daily), they will receive a small pizza from Panago.
